sameera_reddy
Kindly advise me what is the ideal material to be used for containers in which expressed breast milk can be stored in refrigerators.I am aware that glass is ideal but it is practically difficult. I am using stainless steel containers as of now.Is plastic any way superior to it.Kindly also suggest me the references. The reason for the question is problems of rusting with stainless steel material

Stefan Johansson
We use plastic bottles with screw tops for storage for all infants (term or preterm). I do not know where the come from (Medela?) but the plastic bottles are/should be free from BPA. When milk is warmed, the plastic bottle is put in a stainless steele containers with luke-warm water. JACK
For cleaning the bottles we use these : http://www.philips.co.uk/c/avent-baby-steriliser/25286/cat/#filterState0=MCC_STERILIZERS_SU_GB_CONSUMER%3Dtrue We do not use steel containers. ..Steel containers were associated with a marked decline in cell count and cell viability when compared to polyethylene.. source: http://guidelines.gov/content.aspx?id=23797 At the same time this source says steel containers are ok: http://books.google.com.sa/books?id=96LEZb5s7psC&lpg=PA161&ots=x4IlOwS_Ot&dq=human%20breast%20milk%20storage%20in%20steel%20containers&pg=PA161#v=onepage&q=steel%20containers&f=false Edited August 1, 2012 by JACK
