Igor Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Dear colleagues. is well-known use of erythropoietin for neuroprotection HIE during therapeutic hypothermia. It is used in neonates of 35 weeks or more Unfortunately infants less than 35 weeks also sometimes suffer asphyxia and implementation HIE What recommendations has the use of erythropoietin in such cases?
Stefan Johansson Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 But can erythropoietin really be considered standard of care? The most recent review I have found is this one (open access on https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4529536/) and it seems rather that larger studies are ongoing. There is one large US-based study still ongoing (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01378273). A study in Europe (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01732146) is said to be ongoing but "not recruiting" (stopped early?) As far as I know, NICUs in Sweden do not use erythropoietin for neuroprotection (or, to my knowledge, for treatment of anemia either).
Igor Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 Thank you Stefan for the response and the links provided. We will continue to monitor the investigations and wait intersnye facts and recommendations interesting 1
Francesco Cardona Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I also recommend Keith Barrington's comment in his blog on erythropoietin in asphyxia https://neonatalresearch.org/2016/05/09/erythropoietin-for-asphyxia/ It is about the most recent phase II study on this topic published last year. 1
