Is there a contraindication exists for applying local anesthetic cream before inserting needle for blood collection? it will definetly reduce the pain of big needle prick for the donor.

I know there is no contraindication to use local anesthetic cream for day to day IV & blood collections. I want to know why this denial for the donors?

Hi there,

We do not use EMLA cream in our unit since it has not been approved for use on preterm infants. Instead we use sucrose 40% gel which is made up for us in pharmacy. We give this 2 - 3 minutes before the procedure. We do not use this on infants less than 30 weeks gestation because there is some evidence that it might contribute to the development of NEC due to the high glucose concentration. We have had good results with this.
