mohamad Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 IS it Scientific to add Olive oil or sunflower oil to eternal milk feeding of preterm infant to provide him with omega 3 and to give him more calories ? mohamad ismail neonatology residant aga central hospital mansoura , egypt
andreasrepa Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Dear Mohamad ! Olive and sunflower oil do not contain omega 3, fish oil does. So I think you will give more energy with the milk, but not more omega 3. Normally the formula should (as well as mother´s milk of course) contain omega 3. Many greetings, Andreas
JACK Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 If you you want to increase calorie density, there are some who add MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil. MCT oil is available but costly. So one very cheap and effective alternative is to use purified/refined coconut oil. Coconut oil contains mainly MCT .

vijayashankara Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 In India, the practice is to add edible coconut oil to feeds, as Jack put it rich in MCT and also unsaturated fatty acids and it is cheap.
