erythropoietin for neuroprotection HIE in premature infants

Featured Replies

Dear colleagues.
is well-known use of erythropoietin for neuroprotection HIE during therapeutic hypothermia. It is used in neonates of 35 weeks or more
Unfortunately infants less than 35 weeks also sometimes suffer asphyxia and implementation HIE
What recommendations has the use of erythropoietin in such cases?

But can erythropoietin really be considered standard of care? The most recent review I have found is this one (open access on https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4529536/) and it seems rather that larger studies are ongoing.

There is one large US-based study still ongoing (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01378273). A study in Europe (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01732146) is said to be ongoing but "not recruiting" (stopped early?)

As far as I know, NICUs in Sweden do not use erythropoietin for neuroprotection (or, to my knowledge, for treatment of anemia either).
