Levetiracetam and newborns

Featured Replies

Hello for all:

Anybody have a experience with use of levatiracetam in new borns and outcome to 18 months?

hello,

we have used levetiracetam in a dose of 10 mg /kg ,though reference says only to be used in older infants.

neurologists are happy about it . they say its interaction with other drugs is minimal and dose can be hiked upto 50-60 mg/kg/dy.

We have used for the baby with intraranial bleed as an addition to phenobarbiton and eptoin

Hello,

I'm an italian child Neurologist collaborating with the local NICU: in cases of status epilepticus refractory to phenobarbital and midazolam we use a load of levetiracetam IV (50 mg/kg), followed form a manteinance dose of 40 mg/kg/die divided in two doses.

Has someone else experience with these AED?

yes we have a good outcome with levatiracetam. past 6 months we are using the drug in our NICU as secondline AED. sofar we gave for around 20 babies , all of them doing well with no significant side effects. but we know it is not recommedned for neonates officially, but my prof ped. neurologist suggest it is a promising drug it may come as 1st line drug in near future by the authorities.we are using 10mg/kg
