We use a barcode system to scan breastmilk to verifiy that it belongs to correct mother and baby. What do other NICU's do? Do you use barcode systems, double check with another person before feeding, or do you verify at all?

Is it gives true results???

This is how we do it:

all milk containers are marked with the baby's personal i'd nb and name.

The nurse reads this info loud in front of the parents. If none of the parents is present, this crosscheck is done together with another staff member.

The nurse then signs that the container is given to the parents/assisting nurse who feeds the baby.

We switched to the barcode system a few years ago, and it has been pretty successful. To Cristina24, yes. We have a section in the chart to identify if the milk was scanned or double-checked with another RN, and the results are audited regularly. I think that barcode scanning of milk does reduce the risk of a sentinel event.

I bump this thread as we discuss to introduce a bar code scanning system.

´Would be interested to hear more about technical details, incl brand names/retailers

We use the MOMS (Mother's Own Milk System) put out by Timeless Medical Systems. Each infant & mother are entered into the system giving the infant a barcode. This barcode prints on each label. These labels are printed and given to mom to place on bottles when pumped. Each label provides place for meds & time/date. When mom brings milk back we scan the bottle and location to be stored (refrigerator or freezer), the system then generates another label with an expiration date. When it is time to feed the infant you scan the infant and the bottle and it identifies the right milk and that it is in date.
