is it always necessary to have a central line for parenteral nutrition in newborns?

Infants in the Karolinska units commonly have a peripherally inserted cathether (at least if parenteral nutrition is assumed to last for more than a few days), typically from a cubital vein. Our aim is to reach for a central position for the catheter tip, typically in vena cava superior.

I personally have good experience from PICs, but I would argue that a regular peripheral catheters is sometimes better, for example during KNS septicemia when one may want to avoid all central lines.
