  1. Sherry E. Courtney, MD, MS, will present this free educational webinar on October 30, 11:00, AM EST. AARC credit and certificates of completion will be offered. Here is a brief synopsis: In the NICU, a neonate’s status can change quickly. Fluctuations in CO2, regardless of the cause, can result in rapid, severe, and sometimes permanent developmental and pulmonary handicaps. Yet, considering the ease with which CO2 can be monitored continuously and transcutaneously, it is startling how few NICU’s rely on continuous monitoring. Continuous transcutaneous monitoring provides a steady flow of information of vital importance to clinical decisions. Transcutaneous monitoring enables physicians to intervene at the appropriate time to prevent infant complications and morbidities. This webinar will: Explain why fluctuations in CO2 are dangerous to the lung and brain of the newborn and preterm infant. Discuss proper use of the transcutaneous monitor and how to interpret what it tells you. Identify three clinical scenarios in which transcutaneous trending can be an invaluable monitoring tool.
