Breastfeeding is the superior form of infant feeding, actively promoted internationally by the World Health Organisation, WHO.

Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they have accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large.

For infants in NICU settings, also preterm infants, breast feeding should be a goal at the time of discharge. Promotion of breastfeeding in NICU settings is effective and probably cost-effective, according to this report:
