Lipid peroxides and hydrogen peroxide are generated in light-exposed TPN. Light-sensitized riboflavin present in parenteral multivitamin preparations catalyzes electron transfer between electron donors, such as vitamin C, amino acids, or lipids and oxygen dissolved in the total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solution. Hydrogen peroxide is the major peroxide generated in the TPN solution. Hydroperoxides have been associated with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, chronic lung disease, retinopathy of prematurity, and necrotizing enterocolitis
