Nutrition & Feeding

We use a barcode system to scan breastmilk to verifiy that it belongs to correct mother and baby. What do other NICU's do? Do you use barcode systems, double check with another person before feeding, or do you verify at all?

Kindly advise me what is the ideal material to be used for containers in which expressed breast milk can be stored in refrigerators.I am aware that glass is ideal but it is practically difficult. I am using stainless steel containers as of now.Is plastic any way superior to it.Kindly also suggest me the references. The reason for the question is problems of rusting with stainless steel material

Is anyone using Probiotics for their infants? If so, which product do you use? Why did you choose this product? How do you administer? How often? When do you start them?

Hi all: There was some recommendation from AAP regarding fortifying the formula or breast milk in VLBW for 6-9 month or until the infant get into acceptable growth chart lines. As far as I k ow, many VLBW don't have a catch up growth may be until somewhere between 1-2 years. Of course even worse with the sick infants , SGA or IUGR. My questions are: What is your routine practice in discharging VLBW on fortified formula or BM. How do you recommend continuing that? Do their pediatricians follow the recommendation? How would you decide the fortification strength and length? Studies ? How do you guarantee that the nursing mother will continue pumping and fortifying the m…

Hi All I would like to know if you use MCT oils in VLBW infants. If, yes what are your protocols. Personally I am not a big fan of MCT oils and would use it only if I am not achieving enough weight despite EBM feeds of 200 ml/kg/day fortified with HMF and all investigations normal. Hope the New Year brings the best for you Dr K P Sanghvi Neonatologist Mumbai India
