  1. Thanks for your comment! I hope I understand your question/comment correctly. Actually, polls can be started by anyone who starts a new topic. One just need to tick the option to post a poll, and do it. We will remind everyone about this option in the next newsletter.
  2. Hi! From the visitor statistics we see surprisingly good figures. In January 09 we had more than 4000 unique visitors and with the current trend we might have hit 5000 unique visitors during February. Still, most visitors stop by and read, but do not post so much in the forums. And, we want more action! We want to hear from you: please post your honest feedback, positive and negative, yet constructive criticism. Do you want more frequent emails with reminders? Do you want to read tutorials how the 99nicu community works? Do you want more competitions and give-aways? Should 99nicu be stripped from some features? ´ Should 99nicu organise a congress on evidence-based neonatology (www.ebneo.org....), live and with an internet stream?! Do you want to have local/national sections (in other languages)? Best wishes from the 99nicu HQ!
  3. Well, it is difficult to advice you since I have not attended those courses in London. I suggest you email (see address in first post) and ask the organisers.

  9. We don not administer probiotics at our department but the discussion i comming up more often.
  10. Dear all, 99nicu has its first birthday today! We have worked a lot during the year (and especially Stefan...) and I think that we have done a good job so far. And we have more plans for the future... I think we are worth 1) a drink 2) a short holiday & 3) a 99nicu car
  11. BMJ published "ABC on preterm birth" in 2004, this is a nice series of rather basic articles on a lot of aspects of preterm birth, neonatal care etc-etc. Click on the link below, scroll down to "ABC of preterm birth" and the 12 articles (+1 one correction) is displayed! http://resources.bmj.com/bmj/topics/abcs
  12. Dear friends, we have a rather old-fashioned way of taping ET tubes, using safety pin. We will post pictures about our technique soon and ask others to do the same!
  13. Just wanted to post a picture, from our web statistics, showing the list of countries where our visitors came from during 1-25 April. I think the list is quite interesting - we (99nicu'ers) come from everywhere (almost!) (The picture is a montage of two pictures; I had to make two screenshots to capture the whole list!)
  14. Dear all, it would be valuable to hear feedback from you about our intentions to arrange Virtual lectures and Grand Rounds (with live audio and video and slides!). Is the idea itself good or should we focus on written discussions solely? If you support the idea, at what time would you prefer to visit virtual meetings? (we are aware of the limitations of the globe - but we should be able to broadcast at times ok for at least half of the world!) Do you have any comments on the conference system we are able to use, Marratech? Would you suggest a different system? (at the moment Karolinska Institutet lend us conference space through Marratech for free).
  15. Please find the current list of IPOKRaTES seminars for 2007 below. Visit http://www.ipokrates.info for detailed information.
  16. Do you refer to 1) the use of buffert at resuscitation or 2) treatment of prolonged but slight metabolic acidosis sometimes seen in (well) preterm infants?
  17. I fully agree, as long as there are no speciell risk factors there is no need for administration of dextrose. As you mentioned, early hypoglycemia is transient and fysiological. In preterm , SGA or infants born to mothers with diabetes we usally try to prevent hypoglycemia by early feedings.
  18. Dear hehady, I guess you mean 33-36 week infants by late preterm/near term infants. Our experience is that most of these infants only get a low-grade RDS, a "wet lung" - maybe about half of these infants are given nCPAP the first days of life in our units. It is quite uncommon that we give surfactant to those infants, but we do give socalled INSURE procedure (intub, surf, extub) to some infants (with an a/a-ratio of <0.22) Unless severe complications happen (sepsis, pneumo etc) we almost never need to use mechanical ventilation to this group of infants. That's the vote from Stockholm!
  19. Alexander Rakow replied to a post in a topic in Gastrointestinal Issues
Sounds like a real emergency to me! Seek for major gastrointestinal etiology, such as malrotation and volvulus of the gut. Consult the nearest surgeon asap and discuss further handling (radiology etc).
  20. Check this article out: Neonatal tachycardias: an update, by Kothari & Skinner Archives of Disease in Childhood 2006;91:F136-F144 (if you upgrade to a Premium Membership you can read this article in full text!)
  21. Alexander Rakow replied to a post in a topic in Practical Procedures
We have a reference curve also for preterm infants, it is integrated in our computerized patient record system. The reference to the growth charts: Acta Paed (suppl) 1994;399:64-70. I attach two examples, one for a girl and one for a boy.
  22. This is a not so serious thread... but I just want to share a funny picture from our unit, taken by our Polaroid camera, when I inserted a peripher canula. The short silhuette is one of our (short) nurses. Feel free to post pictures! But consider patient integrity etc.
  23. We have agreed with ADC to offer free full text access to the ADC web site during a trial period till the 31st of January 2007. We are actively searching for external funding but it is likely that a symbolic fee will need to be charged after the trial period. You find the link in the Members area (scroll down to the end of the main page). Please note that even after registration you need to visit the ADC web site through the link in the Members area.
  24. We have now opened the MEMBERS AREA, you find it at the bottom of the main page of 99nicu or here. The Lounge is there, and the Forum Members presentations. We hope to add some other member benefits there soon (read ADC access). PS. Please note that threads started in the Members are are not included in the RSS feed.
  25. Well; 5 members voting for, 2 against, and 600+ non-responders... You do not need to be a statistical expert to consider this poll to be unreliable! But we agree with you Carlos; Mark Twain had a point. We will restructure our site a little and soon open a Members Area, which will include the Member presentation Forum, the Lounge and also some other member benefits, like our broadened collaboration with ADC. Stay tuned!
