Medication & Pharmacology

  1. Dear colleagues Yesterday I became aware of this forum, and I think it is an excellent medium to announce research in the field of Neonatology. Therefore I would like to invite you to take part in research concerning prolonged or chronic pain in the newborn. In the last decades much work has been done regarding acute and procedural pain. Prolonged or chronic pain still needs exploration. With the aid of your opinion and the Delphi method we aim at describing the concept of chronic pain in the newborn, including a definition and description of etiologic and diagnostic determinants. You can find detailed information about the background and methodology on www.ceepain.o…

When we use Ampicillin & Gentamicin for intravenous therapy it has been our habit to dose with the Ampicillin first because it is readily available in the unit, then start the Gentamicin dose second. The discussion at the moment is whether the Gentamicin should be first and how much of a wait between the two medications. Would you all share your thoughts. Thanks, Gayle

Hi everyone, I am intrigued as to whether other units preferentially use an oral or iv preparation when attempting to wean ventilator dependent infants. Our oral preps result in such small doses as the regime tails off I am now concerned that even the smallest vomit/posset/aspirate could inhibit the efficacy of outcome. Would it be more pragmatic to curtail administration to purely iv. Value any thoughts. Best wishes Alistair

  5. Good evening all, I have a keen interest in aerosol delivery to neonates and am trying to characterise the levels of aerosol deposition in these children's lungs. As you may know, there are not too many in vivo studies characterising aerosol deposition in this population and so I need to rely on preclinical and in vitro work. Over the last number of months, I have been trying to source CT scans of preterm (ELBW, LBW) neonates with a mind to creating a cast model using a rapid prototype machine, similar to The Sophia Anatomical Infant Nose-Throat (Saint) model (9 mth old). Unfortunately, I have found these CT scans are hard to source. I am reaching out to the …

Dear colleagues on the list Previously we posted a request concerning national guidelines about neonatal pain, and recieved some good information. Thanks a lot! The results will be compiled in a scientfic report. Many of these guidelines give recommendations on a general level but no details about drugs or doses. We would therefore try to get som example from clinical practice over the world and have thus constructed a short web-survey about premedication before intubation of neonates. We are aware that this is not a scientic data collection but also voluntary answers given on an internet resource can give a snapshot of the actual situation. We kindly ask all …
