  1. Hi 99ers , Given the well recognised potential for drug error on the NICU I would be grateful for some insight into how other Units have approached the processes of education, surveillance and management of medicine errors on their NICU. If you prefer please feel free to email me ( alih.1@icloud.com ) Kind regards Ali

When discussing asymmetrical IUGR with parents emphasis should be placed on the preservation of brain growth and that body weight will catch up As well as categorising by weight it is important to clinically assess the newborn infant to ascertain whether it is small for gestational age or exhibiting signs of intrauterine retardation. The causes of IUGR should be considered and the consequences of IUGR predicted and managed appropriately (e.g. hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, polycythaemia). 😃😃😃 In nursing the extreme preterm it is important to be aware of the complications of prematurity, which include poor temperature and fl uid regulation and cardiorespi…

Hi.......... We have recently had many parents requesting that the siblings of our babies be allowed to visit. In the past we allowed children to visit their baby brother or sister but that policy was changed due to growing concerns about infection risks. In our area, community acquired MRSA is becoming much more common and we also worry about RSV season during the winter months. I have been working on a compromise of sorts.......that would allow the siblings to visit if the visit is pre-scheduled and supervised. Their entire visit would be managed by an RN and would include some education at their level about "their" baby, a bit of teaching about infections an…

  10. Several scales to assess pain in newbrns exist: both for acute and for postsurgical pain. Scales for postsurgical or chronical pain are few and easy to use. I recently wondered if pain scales for acute pain are really necessary: they seem scarcely used in clinical practice though they are more than 40(!), they are often complicated, and -above all- they give a pain score when the procedure is over, i.e., when (I fear) it is too late. Acute pain scales do not consider the context of the procedure, but only babies' reactions; therefore they should simultaneously use and combineseveral indicators. I proposed to settle for pain detection instead of pain scoring. It is easy:…
