We are starting to make babies in our NICU NPO during blood transfusions to reduce the risk of NEC. Does anyone have any opinions on this matter, or follow the same practice?

  7. Hello 99ers, i would be curious to know if you place the heated probe on the babies abdomen or not. If not, why not? I recently followed a discussion where a nurse argued, that the heated probe can lead to "inflammatory like" processes under the skin surface, because of the generated heat, which in turn can lead to a greater risk for NEC.... I cant imagine the mechanism of this theory and i havent heard of anything like that so far. I wouldn`t stick the probe onto a symptomatic belly, but i haven`t experienced anything in that direction when a probe was stuck onto a asymptomatic belly. My hospital is making some changes regarding the location that we are performing C/S. We are looking at moving more of our C/S to the OR and the OR Team is concerned about allowing the father to attend the procedure. There has even been suggestion that the father must be TB tested to be allowed to attend. I would appreciate any input from you regarding what your attendance practice is for fathers or immediate family members during a C/S if it is performed in the main OR? Thanks in advance.

We are having a discussion about the benefits (or lack thereof) of using sheepskin in the isolette for infants in the NICU. I have done a literature search and cannot find much. The AAP does not recommend sheepskin as it teaches the parents it is okay to put something soft and fluffy under their infants. The fear is that this practice will be continued at home and be a contributing factor in SIDS. Is anyone aware of any studies which look at the risk/benefits of sheepskin? I believe I remember reading one many years ago stating that it was of no benefit to the infants. A recent study published in Advances in Neonatal Care looked at sleeping surfaces, gel pillows, …
